We Were Liars is a book about a girl named Cadence, trying to figure out what had happened to her a year before the book’s setting. On her journey to seek clarification, she falls for this Indian boy named Gat. That same summer, the two start to have “something going;” Cad has received word that she is forced to take a trip to Europe with her father. They come back from Europe and Cadence is struck by vague memories of what she has done to the family two years before. Terrified by these actions the family hid from her, the reader has only one question; why? Why did they keep this action she brought to her family a secret if she didn’t remember it? Was it so she didn’t have to live with the thought of regret and disappointment from her family? Or did they keep it a secret for monetary gain?
