SLEEPING FRESHMEN NEVER LIE by David Lubar

Scott Hudson is just an average kid trying to find his place in his first year of high school. BUT...his bus driver is a yeller, and the only way to avoid swats from upperclassmen is to sit near Sheldon Murmbower (who seems to attract them), thus allowing Scott some invisibility.      Even though he only got lost twice on the first day, he didn't avoid being given misdirections to the furnace room by a snickering upperclassman.  It's not long before he realizes that in addition to trying to fit in, his relationship with his three best friends, Kyle, Patrick, and Mitch is about to change as well.  Just when he thinks that life cannot get anymore difficult, he discovers that his mom is expecting a baby, and that change inspires him to begin to write a series of survival lessons for his new sibling.

Scott's High School Survival Tips include:
...Never wear a dorky hat.  Especially if there are big kids around.
Don't carry your books under your arm in a crowded hall.
Try to avoid the bus, even if it means catching a ride from a stranger with a chain saw....
(Lubar, 31)

Despite his best efforts, Scott manages to survive the pain that high school inevitably supplies.  He learns that a girl named Lee, with her fishnets and piercings, is much different than she appears.  A tough guy named Wesley does more than pilfer snacks and cigarettes, and Julia (with whom he shared peanut butter crackers in kindergarten) may not be the dream that he imagined.  Scott's story is honest and filled with humor, despite the struggles along the way.
