I have been teaching in Rockingham County for 22 years. I am a first grade teacher at South River Elementary School who loves reading! It gives me such pleasure to see my students develop their love of books while they are in my class.
In the story, Rotten Island is presented as a paradise for nasty creatures. The descriptive language is so wonderful, you can imagine yourself there. The animals are described with words like "scraggly, scaly, slimy, hairy, insulting", and "suspicious." They are "armor-plated, ridiculous, and horrid!" The look on my student's faces as they looked at the illustrations and listened to the story was priceless. --So much fun!
This book is rich with descriptive language and lent itself to the possibility of teaching adjectives through a STEM project where students created a diorama of the island and have the opportunity to display some of it's nastiest characters as well as the plants that you would find there.
This is a must read book. Your children will love it!
