Gifted. Melody is gifted but she can’t show it because she can’t talk. Imagine if you couldn’t talk. Melody can’t eat, walk,or talk in the book Out of My Mind by Sharon M. Draper.

Melody, shy, wants to be able to talk and share her feelings, but she has a disability that doesn’t allow her to talk, eat,or walk by herself. So she convinces her parents to buy her a computer that allows her to speak. Then she expresses her feelings, but will everyone be ready to hear them?

My favorite part in the book was when Mr.D announced to the class that Melody was the only person that got a perfect score on the test. In this part Melody was very surprised and shocked. This was my favorite part of the book because nobody thought that Melody was that smart. I liked how she got to prove everyone wrong. The life lesson of the book Out of My Mind is not to judge people by how they look because they could be very different in the inside. Everyone in this book thinks that Melody is not smart just because she has a disability but then when the class finds out about her score on the test they realized that she was very smart.

The greatest value in this book is that Melody never gives up on her dreams of talking. This is the greatest value because she spends a month researching about different computers that are for disabled people. After spending a month researching, she finally finds a perfect computer that can attach to her wheelchair. You will fall in love with Melody and her confidence of learning to speak. At the end of the book you will learn that giving up is never the right answer.
