I am a 9th grader at East Rockingham.

I started reading Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children and I was hooked from the start. In about a week, I had read through the entire trilogy and enjoyed every second of it. I highly recommend this book; it takes place in the past...and present, it is packed full of surprises, and the author’s writing style makes the reader feel like a character in the book!

My favorite books are the ones that take a step back in time. Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children has many interesting elements, such as time-traveling, that give the reader a look into the past. Jacob Portman, the main character, always thought he was ordinary kid. That is, until he realized that all of the crazy stories his grandfather had been telling him his whole life were true. As he tries to explore and uncover the secrets of his grandfather’s (and his own) mysterious history, he finds that he can not only study the , but live in it.

The plot of this book is filled with surprises. Every time I think I have it figured out, something unexpected happens. Jacob comes upon a seemingly perfect place to stay while in the midst of WWII, but then the outside world finds its way into his little heaven-on-earth. Every day is the same - happy, sunny, and perfect - until the hollows come. After that, the book becomes a fast-paced story of Jacob’s and peculiar kids’ survival.

The best part about this book is that the author, Ransom Riggs, has a very captivating writing style. He gives insight into Jacob’s every thought, making the reader very much a part of the book. “There never was any girl. I'd imagined her, and the rest of them, too.” Written in first person, the reader can see the world through the eyes of the main character and enjoy the story just like it was really happening. Another element that really makes this novel stand out is its use of photos. The author integrates photos from his collection into the story, making it that much more interesting.

The twists and turns, the setting, and the way the book is written are just a few of the many reasons that Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children is an outstanding book. Unfortunately, I’ve read the whole series, but who says a series can’t be read more than once? I would highly recommend not only this book, but the series, to anyone and everyone looking for a great read!
