Guest Blogger: Christina Buckwalter, Cub Run Elementary I teach reading to kindergarten through grade 5 students. ![]() Many of Patricia Polacco’s books are based on true stories, another of the many reasons I love her books. This is the story of a slave named January who lived with the Crosswhite family on a Kentucky plantation. He was badly beaten and left for dead when he attempted to escape and was captured. Sadie, the youngest of the Crosswhites, loved the wooden sparrow January whittled for her but left it behind when the family traveled on the Underground Railroad to freedom. You will love reading about how the people of a small Michigan town protected the Crosswhites when slave trackers come looking for the runaway slaves and the part the wooden sparrow plays in the story.
