This book is a page-turner because you never know what is going to happen next. At one point in the book, Pattyn is hunting down a mountain lion with her aunt and a few friends. They are hunting it because it killed and ate one of their cows. She wasn’t paying attention and she got separated from the group. The mountain lion found her and almost killed her but her love interest, Ethan, saved her life. Another page-turning example is when Pattyn is in her room. Ethan gave her a handgun to use if she ever had to. After she was home for a few days, her dad beat her. She was looking for something in the hidden place under her dresser and she felt the gun. She thought about using it but she left it there.
The style the book is written in is very different. I personally have never read a book like it, but I enjoyed the book very much. The words are places in a way that keeps the book interesting and suspenseful. She places certain words in ways that show importance. She is constantly leaving you on a cliffhanger, and she is always shooting in little surprises. Personally for me, it made me want to keep reading more and not put the book down.
This book is highly relatable for some families. Pattyn’s dad beats her mother. When her mom was pregnant, Pattyn was away because she got in trouble and was sent to her Aunt’s house. Her dad beat Jackie, Pattyn’s younger sister. That was until Pattyn got home and her dad started to beat the both of them. Part of the reason he beats them is because he is rarely home and when he is he drinks and watches TV. Her dad is very strict and doesn’t tolerate bad behavior. When he heard that she got in trouble at school he sent her to her aunt’s house. It was the best thing for Pattyn and it helped her get through tough times. That’s also where she meets the soon to be, love of her life.
When I was in kindergarten, I started to read chapter books. Every now and then I read for enjoyment. It isn’t my number one activity to do in my free time, but I will read. I really enjoyed this book and it was time well spent. I highly suggest reading this book. It is very well written and a great read.
