The story develops and becomes more complex as Karl begins a relationship with a non-Jewish girl and as violence against Jews intensifies. This is a story about boxing, personal growth, and a family’s fight for survival. You will find yourself rooting for Karl and his family. There are definitely parts of the story that are difficult to read, and it’s not a “feel good” book, but a satisfying story nonetheless. I loved the historical fiction aspect of this book and was fascinated to research the real Max Schmeling and the world of boxing during that time period. Highly recommended for fans of historical fiction!
