I am a freshman at East Rock.
In this book, it seems as if there is always some sort of suspense. It is about an alien named John Smith that had to come to Earth when his planet, Lorien, was destroyed by an alien race called the Mogadorians. His guardian, Henri, says that the Mogadorians are searching for him so that they can kill him, so Henri and John are constantly moving, trying to hide from them. There is almost always suspense in this book because you never know when the Mogadorians will show up to kill him, and he and Henri might have to leave their new home in Paradise, Florida at any moment.
I really like when authors use their creativity to make an amazing story. This is a good example of that. There are so many creative elements in I am Number Four that I absolutely love. When Henri and John came to Earth, they weren’t alone in the ship. Along with them came eight other prodigy kids, who were members of the Garde. There was one Cêpan for each prodigy child. Cêpan is really just a fancy name for protector, and Henri is John’s Cêpan. It is not easy for the Mogadorians to kill the members of the Garde, because they have to be killed in numerical order. Each of the prodigies has their own number, and the first three have already been killed. John is on the run because he is number four, and the Mogadorians need to kill him next.
I know that a lot of books appeal to a specific group of readers, but this book really could appeal to anyone. I know some girls don’t like much action, which this book is packed with, but there is also a romantic story involved. When John moves to Paradise, he meets a girl named Sarah, and he loves her from the first moment he meets her. The action parts are great for guys, and the romance is good for girls.
I didn’t think I would ever be rid of my Harry Potter book trap, but this book turned everything around. It is also part of a series, so instead of running right back to Harry Potter, I’ll try to find the rest of this series and read that. I am so glad that I chose this book, and I can’t wait to see what happens in the following books.
